Jurgen Klopp would suit Liverpool 'perfectly,' says Steffen Freund

Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Steffen Freund believes Jurgen Klopp could be the perfect fit for Liverpool.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Klopp is a candidate to take over from Brendan Rodgers, who was relieved of his duties following the Reds' 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby with Everton on Sunday.

Some bookmakers suspended betting on Monday in anticipation of the former Dortmund boss' arrival at Anfield.

And Freund, who played for Dortmund for five years between 1993 and 1998, says that the German is well placed to succeed Rodgers.

"They've been waiting an age for a league title," Freund told Sky Sport Deutschland. "That's the problem at Liverpool. I'm surprised that Brendan Rodgers was let go so soon.

"Klopp said himself that if he went abroad, he'd go to England. To go to Liverpool would suit both parties perfectly."

Klopp won two Bundesliga titles and one DFB Pokal with Dortmund before stepping down at the end of last season after seven years in charge.

He also led the club to the 2013 Champions League final, which they lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich.

Ex-Bayern player and coach Franz Beckenbauer also feels that Klopp would be a sensible appointment for Liverpool.

"Jurgen Klopp would fit in anywhere," he told Sky Sport Deutschland. "Liverpool have made history [in the past]. The fans are longing for success."

Klopp has previously refused to comment on rumours linking him with Liverpool, while he has also rejected approaches from Marseille and Mexico since leaving Dortmund.
