Nicklas Bendtner gets Wolfsburg backing despite poor form

Wolfsburg have backed Nicklas Bendtner to prove successful despite omitting him from the squad at the weekend.

Bendtner joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer in the summer after leaving Arsenal but has so far failed to provide a goal or assist for his new club.

The Denmark international, who complained earlier this month about a lack of service from his teammates, was left out of the Wolfsburg squad for the 2-1 win at Freiburg at the weekend.

Wolves coach Dieter Hecking said he had included Bas Dost among the substitutes ahead of Bendtner because he had "the feeling that it was about time," and the Dutchman appeared for the first time this season when he replaced veteran striker Ivica Olic for the final 14 minutes in Freiburg.

Even so, the club's sporting director, Klaus Allofs, told kicker that the issue should not be blown out of proportion.

"We shouldn't turn it into a sensation every time we make changes," he said. "We've got three strikers, who all have the potential to play. We are convinced that [Bendtner] will score decisive goals when we need him."

Allofs also suggested Bendtner would be given the chance to impress in the Europa League trip to FC Krasnodar, but it has since been confirmed that the 26-year-old will not be available due to a groin problem.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg defender Felipe Lopes, 27, has revealed that he suffered a minor stroke in July 2014.

Bild reports that the Brazilian remains on blood-thinning medication as he fights to resume his career after a transient ischemic attack and is still unable to take part in training.

"I am sure that I will continue to be a professional footballer. I will continue," he said. "There is no reason for me to not believe every day in my comeback."
