Rafa Benitez frustrated by injuries to Real's Danilo and James Rodriguez

Real Madrid coach Rafa Benitez has bemoaned the loss of Brazil defender Danilo and Colombia midfielder James Rodriguez, both ruled out through injuries suffered while playing for their countries.

Current rules say that if a player is injured for more than 28 days after an international, FIFA is required to pay a portion of his salary until he is fit again.

Rodriguez suffered a torn thigh muscle in a friendly against Peru, while Danilo sustained a foot injury while on international duty with Brazil in the U.S.

Benitez said: "I think it's great that they [FIFA] compensate based on the damage it causes to the clubs.

"We cannot forget that the players still get paid if they are injured, hence compensation is a must.

"We know that having many international players means we have a bigger risk. It's unfortunate, but it can happen.

"Danilo was not injured when he went with his national team, but these things happen. We have to monitor our players -- at times you can and at others you cannot."

Rodriguez and Danilo both face a month on the sidelines, and Benitez voiced his frustration that players could sometimes get hurt in "insignificant" games.

He added: "I don't make the rules, but they make them go to play games that are insignificant. I'm not talking only about friendlies; also those that finish 7-0."

Benitez said the absence of James, who scored twice in a 5-0 league victory over Real Betis before the international break, was "a problem" and added: "Obviously, he was playing well. You never like to lose a player.

"We need to focus on the players we have available and try to bring out their best."
