Roma's Francesco Totti to make announcement amid new deal talk

An announcement involving Roma legend Francesco Totti will be made this week amid reports he is set to be offered a new contract by the club.

Speaking before Roma's 1-0 win over Napoli on Monday, Roma's sporting director Mauro Baldissoni said an "announcement will be made by Francesco and the president" in the next few days.

According to reports, including La Gazzetta dello Sport, Totti, 39, is set to sign on for his hometown club -- the only club of his career -- for another season.

Roma are due to launch their sales campaign for 2016-17 season tickets on Thursday, leading to speculation that moment could be opportune to confirm Totti's stay.

"When he comes onto the field, he even gets people watching the game who were busy preparing food in the VIP lounges," Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said on Monday. "He sparks enthusiasm."

The recent row between Spalletti and Totti had suggested that the club captain would not be offered a new contract for next season, while club president James Pallotta said at a conference in Boston last month that the problem with Italians is they do not know when the right time has come to call it a day, referring to Totti's future.

The Italian recently scored the equaliser in Roma's 3-3 draw with Atalanta and netted two goals in as many minutes to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 win against Torino to keep the third-placed side in contention of finishing second.
