Marcus Rashford is no 'flash in the pan' at Man United - Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick is backing teenage star Marcus Rashford to realise his full potential after an outstanding start to his first-team career.

Rashford, 18, burst onto the scene two months ago when forced into action against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League when Anthony Martial was injured in the warmup.

He scored twice in that game, and now has six goals in 11 starts -- including a brace against Arsenal, the winner at Manchester City and a superb strike to help United into the FA Cup semifinals with victory at West Ham United on Wednesday.

That has led to calls for Roy Hodgson to consider Rashford -- who has only recently been capped by England at under-20 level -- for Euro 2016. But while the England coach said last month he would not rule Rashford out of contention, The Times reported on Friday that the striker would be in France -- but as part of the U20 squad at the Toulon tournament rather than the Euros.

Rashford's place in the team is now coming under threat from Wayne Rooney, with the United and England skipper making his return from a two-month injury injury with a late cameo at Upton Park.

Carrick believes the academy product will build on a promising start to his career.

"It's incredible," Carrick said of Rashford's emergence. "It's so good to see young lads come in, do well and take their chance. Not in his wildest dreams could he have predicted the last two or three months that he's had.

"He's still got his feet on his ground though. He keeps coming in, he doesn't change, he works hard, he listens, he's willing to learn and I think he's got a great chance of staying at the top for a long time.

"I don't think it's a flash in the pan, in and out. I think he's here to stay and goals like that, we'll welcome more of them.''
