Manchester United's derby-winning striker Marcus Rashford was unable to prevent England under-20s suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Canada in Doncaster on Sunday.
Rashford, 18 -- who had scored the only goal against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium seven days earlier -- set up England's goal for Chelsea's Kasey Palmer on his debut at U20 level.
Earlier, the Canadians had taken a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Kadin Chung and Marco Bustos.
Rashford, whose picture was on the front of the matchday programme, started the game and had his name cheered by the home fans when it was read out over the PA.
England under-20 manager Keith Downing said the experience of playing for his side would be "part of the learning process" for Rashford.
He told the official FA website: "He's marked closely, and then there's the expectancy. He's suddenly in an England shirt and all the interest is with him. So it's all part of his development to continue learning and gaining experience.
"There was speculation about whether he was going to be in this squad or the U21s, but we feel it is better for him to be slowly integrated into the U20s."
Earlier, under-21s manager Gareth Southgate said Rashford would not be fast-tracked into the England squad despite scoring five goals in eight appearances for United.
Speaking ahead of the under-21's game against Switzerland on Saturday, Southgate said: "Probably the top talents in the world get into first teams very young and establish themselves very young.
"We are very conscious that, when you promote a young player too quickly, there can be fallout from that and, at times, the right thing is to move them back down and that is always more difficult.
"Life is very different for someone like Marcus, who has just scored the winner in a Manchester derby."
