Bayern's Thomas Muller proud of Porto win; new top German UCL goal scorer

Thomas Muller hailed Bayern Munich's "phenomenal" 6-1 victory over Porto after he became the top German goal scorer in Champions League history.

Bayern went into the second leg of their quarterfinal on Tuesday trailing by a 3-1 deficit, but had all but sealed the tie by half-time after five first-half goals.

Muller's long-range effort deflected into the goal 10 minutes from the interval to put Bayern 4-0 up, and the 25-year-old Germany international has now scored 27 goals in Champions League -- six of them this season -- to pass Mario Gomez's previous record of 26 goals.

"It was a world-class strike," Muller joked after the match. "Like Hermann Gerland [Bayern's assistant coach] has always said: You don't think where to play the ball; just shoot into the goal."

Muller -- who led the postgame celebrations on the pitch with a megaphone -- was one of many Bayern players to shine in the Allianz Arena victory following a turbulent week, which had seen club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt walk out and coach Pep Guardiola being questioned by parts of the German media.

The forward said of the win: "Wonderful -- I can't put it into words. It couldn't have gone better! It was a huge effort and we made our own luck. Massive credit to the whole team. It was phenomenal at times tonight.

"Having your backs to the wall can be a good thing sometimes. There's been lots of talk about us being down to the bare bones, but they're good bones."

On top of his record-breaking goal, Muller provided both assists for Robert Lewandowski's brace. The first was an impressive cushioned volley to find the Poland international in the air for a header, with the 26-year-old now up to 22 goals in the competition.

Former Borussia Dortmund striker Lewandowski saw his performances questioned earlier this season, but has peaked in recent weeks -- even more so with Guardiola adjusting his tactics following injury layoffs to wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben.

Lewandowski was confident of Bayern's Treble chances after the game, saying: "We played really terrific football in the first half. Lots of people thought we couldn't do it, but we're Bayern.

"We knew we'd have to go for it, but five goals before half-time is just crazy. It's been an unbelievable evening. We can do everything. We want to win the lot."

Sporting executive Matthias Sammer praised Guardiola, adding. "Our tactics were good and playing Philipp Lahm on the right took them by surprise. Pep Guardiola is a blessing for German football and for Bayern."
