Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool players wouldn't cross the line

LIVERPOOL -- Brendan Rodgers says he would never allow his teams to cheat after Chelsea's players were accused of acting like "babies."

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic made the claim over the incident that led to his red card during Wednesday's Champions League round-of-16 second-leg match at Stamford Bridge.

The Sweden international was sent off for a 31st-minute challenge on Oscar as Chelsea's players surrounded referee Bjorn Kuipers to complain.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard suggested on Thursday that such behaviour was "normal" -- and part of the professional player's competitive instinct -- although former teammate Jamie Carragher was critical, drawing Jose Mourinho's ire.

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini had said his players would never surround the referee and, while Rodgers refused to speak directly about Chelsea's behaviour, he said there were high moral standards that he set for his teams.

The Liverpool boss said: "I can only talk about my own team on that. I think my history as a coach will show that I always try to win games of football while having the best sporting behaviour you can have.

"I call it respect. We will do everything we can to win, of course. But for me, there's a line I would never want my teams to cross. I think their behaviour on the field will demonstrate that, in every team that I take.

"We want to be super-competitive, we want to win. But there's a line of behaviour that I would never ask any of my teams to cross. I think you see that in how they play and how they work."

Rodgers takes Liverpool to his former club Swansea on Monday seeking a fifth successive Premier League victory.

The Reds began the weekend in fifth place, two points outside a Champions League spot, having collected 29 points from the last 33 available.

Centre-back Martin Skrtel will be assessed to ensure he is over the head injury he sustained during last Sunday's 0-0 FA Cup quarterfinal draw at home to Blackburn.

Gerrard is fit to return after a month out with a hamstring problem, while fellow midfielder Joe Allen has recovered from a hip injury.

Defender Jon Flanagan is back in training after missing the entire season to date with a knee injury, although he is not ready to play. Fellow full-back Jose Enrique is also back in training following a knee problem, but will not figure at Swansea.

Rodgers said: "We've obviously got Steven back training now, which is great.

"Martin Skrtel came off against Blackburn, but all the procedures regarding his gradual integration back into the group are fine, so he should be available. But we'll monitor that again to make sure everything is safe and secure with his wellness."
