Another win for Dynamos as Highlanders are held

Dynamos kept up their Zimbabwe Premier League resurgence with a 4-3 win over Bulawayo City this weekend as log leaders Ngezi Platinum were held.

Sunday's victory, their fifth in a row, lifted the Harare giants into fourth place in the standings with 26 points, just two behind the leaders.

Better still, the former champions could find themselves in top spot before the week is out, with a ruling expected on their abandoned match away to Chapungu. That game was stopped in the 56th minute after a goalpost collapsed with Dynamos leading 4-0.

There was to be no repeat of the chaos on Sunday, although City proved a more determined opponent after taking a shock early lead through Rupiya. Dynamos were quick to respond though, and it was defender Obey Mwerahari who headed home a Peace Makaha effort on 10 minutes to level matters.

Denver Mukamba ensured Dynamos went into the break in front with a sublime finish from the edge of the box for his fourth in five matches, but City were not to be brushed aside that easily, with 18-year-old Rupiya netting his second of the match moments after the restart.

In-form Cameroonian import Christian Epoupa restored Dynamos' lead before Mukamba set up defender Lincoln Zvasiya as the hosts surged further ahead. Substitute Belington Damson scored City's third with 10 minutes to go to set the stage for a nervy finish for Dynamos, but they held on for the three points.

If the abandoned Chapungu match is taken into account, Dynamos are now the league's most prolific team with 24 goals.

Elsewhere, wingback Takudzwa Chimwemwe and Martin Vengesai were on target as Harare City stunned Black Rhinos 2-1 at Morris Depot to climb further out of the relegation zone into seventh place. Chimwemwe found the target with a scorching long-range effort to level the scores on 35 minutes after Chris Chitsamba had handed Rhinos the lead four minutes earlier.

Harare City surged ahead through a Vengesai strike soon after the break and were able to hold on for a crucial win which lifted them further up the table into 11th place.

In Bulawayo, giants Highlanders could only settle for a goalless draw against How Mine at Barbourfields Stadium. How Mine were unlucky not to walk away with all three points as they dominated the exchanges, creating several scoring opportunities.

Highlanders could not reproduce their magic from last week when they beat Hwange 3-0, with coach Erol Akbay surprisingly relegating youngsters King Nadolo and Godfrey Mataruse to the bench in favour of his underperforming veterans.
