FC Platinum attacker Rodwell Chinyengetere was named Castle Soccer Star of the Year in a ceremony in Harare on Friday, with Norman Mapeza honoured as the top coach of the season.

The versatile midfielder was crowned the best player in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League following an outstanding campaign for the champions.

Chinyengetere has been the standout performer in Platinum's march to a first league title, scoring nine goals and generally impressing with his overall contributions in an attacking midfield role.

Chinyengetere's teammate Kevin Moyo, a central defender, was the first runner-up, with Dynamos captain Ocean Mushure coming third.

Platinum's Norman Mapeza also walked away with the coach of the year accolade ahead of Dynamos' Lloyd Mutasa.

The evening however belonged to Chinyengetere, whose career was almost derailed in 2012 following a horrific leg break which kept him on the sidelines for nearly two years.

The former Hwange star had just broken into the Zimbabwe team at the time, and the effects of the injury continued to restrict his progress even after his return to fitness.

It was only in this campaign that he managed to show the kind of form which earned him international honours, with his goals playing a crucial role in a team where none of the strikers managed to perform with some consistency.

His nine goals make him Platinum's top scorer, with striker Charles Sibanda coming second on six.

"He has done a great job for us and for himself as well," Mapeza told KweséESPN in an earlier interview. "He helped us a lot, especially [recently] where I think he scored three crucial goals.

"He is more like a playmaker, but we encourage him as well to go forward. But he is someone who plays behind the main striker."
