'World's worst team' Bhutan make history in World Cup qualifier

Bhutan created history by progressing from their first ever World Cup qualifying tie after defeating Sri Lanka 3-1 on aggregate.

The small Himalayan kingdom, dubbed "the world's worst national team" due to sitting bottom of the FIFA Ranking in 209th, knocked out a nation 35 places above them thanks to a 2-1 first-round second-leg victory, which followed on from last week's 1-0 first-leg win.

Chencho Gyeltshen proved to be the hero on Tuesday, opening the scoring early on and then netting in the 90th minute to make sure of his side's progress after Zarwan had equalised for Sri Lanka.

Bhutan now advance to the second round of the Asian qualifying section, which kicked off with ties between the 12 lowest-ranked nations in the continent.

Bhutan will be joined there by India after they held on for a 0-0 draw in Nepal to win 2-0 on aggregate.

Sunil Chhetri's brace last week in Guwahati proved to be decisive as Nepal were unable to overturn the first-leg deficit.

Timor-Leste also progressed to the next round of qualifying after defeating Mongolia 1-0 to win the tie 5-1 on aggregate.

Patrick Fabiano scored the only goal of the game for the visitors, with the majority of damage having been inflicted by Timor-Leste at home in the first leg.

Elsewhere, Cambodia booked their place in the second round with a 1-1 draw in Macau to give them a 4-1 aggregate victory.

Thierry Bin opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half, before Leong Ka Hang equalised from the penalty spot for Macau.

Chinese Tapei won their second leg against Brunei Darussalam 2-0 to claim a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Wang Ruei and Chu En-Le were on hand to score for Chinese Tapei either side of half-time to turn the tie around following Brunei Darussalam's 1-0 first-leg win.

The second leg between Pakistan and Yemen was postponed because of "safety and security reasons" after 15 people were killed on Sunday when suicide bombers targeted two churches in a Christian neighborhood of the eastern Pakistan city of Lahore.

FIFA said it will announce a new date and neutral venue for the second leg. Yemen won the first leg 3-1, though that game was played in Doha, Qatar, as FIFA also judged Yemen unsafe to host matches.
