France thrash Netherlands, top Group A; Ronaldo hat trick in Portugal win

France are Group A leaders in UEFA World Cup qualifying again after a dominant 4-0 win against Netherlands. Antoine Griezmann scored for the hosts in the first half and Thomas Lemar added two in the second.

Lemar's goals -- the first a stunning volley from the edge of the box -- came on a day when Arsenal were reported to have bid £90 million for him in a deal that failed to materialise.

Kylian Mbappe, who had just completed a move from Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain, scored in stoppage time to cap the victory as the Dutch finished with 10 men following Kevin Strootman's sending off in the 61st minute.

Didier Deschamps men returned top thanks to Sweden's 3-2 loss to Bulgaria, which saw the former fall back into second place and keep Dutch hopes alive.

Sweden fought back twice to be level at the break with goals from Mikael Lustig and Marcus Berg, but Ivaylo Chochev's 79th-minute strike proved to be the winner for the hosts, who are now right back in qualification contention themselves.

Bulgaria is away to the Netherlands on Sunday, while Sweden travels to struggling Belarus, who were beaten by fellow bottom feeders Luxembourg 1-0.

"We still have our destiny in our own hands," Advocaat said. "If we win our last three games we'll finish second and go to the playoffs."

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick in Portugal's 5-1 win over minnows Faroe Islands. The victory keeps the Real Madrid striker's team in second place in Group B behind Switzerland, who eased past Andorra 3-0. Haris Seferovic scored twice for the Swiss before Stephan Lichtsteiner made sure with a third in the 68th minute.

Ronaldo's three goals took him to 78 for his country in his career, surpassing the 77 that Pele scored for Brazil from 1957-71.

The Portugal star netted with a neat volley from inside the area then added two other goals to surpass the Brazil great and move into second place on the list of Europe's all-time scorers, six behind Hungary great Ferenc Puskas.

In the group's third match, Hungary beat Latvia 3-1 to keep their extremely slim hopes of reaching the World Cup alive.

In Group H, Belgium maintained their advantage in first place with a 9-0 thrashing of Gibraltar courtesy of hat tricks from Romelu Lukaku and Thomas Meunier. And that lead was actually extended over second-place Greece, who could only muster up a goalless draw with Estonia.

Amid the pick of goals for Belgium, none was more enticing than Axel Witsel's strike to make it 4-0 with a perfectly executed bicycle kick. Thirteen minutes later though he was off with a straight red card for a reckless tackle within his own half. It means he will miss the key qualifier in Athens against Greece.

"It is a player we are going to be missing on Sunday," said Martinez. He will likely be replaced by Mousa Dembele.

German coach Michael Skibbe knows Greece will have to perform a lot better against Martinez's team.

"We need to win the match against Belgium to come closer to them," he said.

Estonia defended strongly throughout Thursday's dull match at the Karaiskakis Stadium, with Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan saying: "I'm really proud of my team the way they defended today."

Cyprus dented Bosnia and Herzegovina's qualification hopes, as a 76th-minute goal from Pieros Soteriou saw the Cypriots run out 3-2 winners and actually play themselves back into possible contention for a spot in Russia.
