Anthony Martial must push himself harder - France boss Didier Deschamps

France head coach Didier Deschamps has told Manchester United's Anthony Martial he has to push himself harder and be more consistent.

Martial had an impressive debut season with United after joining from Monaco last summer but the 20-year-old's form at Euro 2016 was disappointing and he has also made a slow start to the new campaign.

Deschamps has called him up for his 23-man France squad as they prepare to face Italy on Thursday and then Belarus five days later, but he warned the forward he must show signs of improvement.

Deschamps said: "At this age, even if he has already proved a lot, he has a lot to learn. He has to maintain a certain level of performance for some time.

"He must push himself a little harder sometimes. It's a state of mind. He's like that, so he needs to battle a little with himself. He needs to get stronger to maintain his level in the long run."

Deschamps did offer some sympathy, though, adding: "He's played a lot."

Martial has started for United in the Community Shield and all their Premier League games so far under new manager Jose Mourinho, but he has been substituted in all four of those matches.

He is yet to score this season, having managed 17 goals in all competitions, including 11 in the Premier League, last season.
