Liverpool midfielder Emre Can ruled out of Germany squad with ankle injury

Germany and Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has been ruled out of his country's upcoming matches against Finland and Norway with an ankle injury and could be sidelined for another few weeks.

Can, 22, has only started one competitive match for Liverpool since returning from Euro 2016, where he was a surprise starter in Germany's semifinal defeat to hosts France, and suffered the injury in the 5-0 win over Burton Albion in the second round of the EFL Cup.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted last week that Can could miss Liverpool's trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, and the German FA confirmed that he would certainly be out of action over the international break.

"Joachim Low will be without Liverpool player Emre Can for tomorrow's friendly against Finland and Sunday's opening World Cup qualifier against Norway," the DFB said on the association's official website. "The defender has suffered a capsular injury in his right foot."

Low will have all other players available, except for Dortmund's Andre Schurrle who withdrew from the squad due to back problems.

The Germany head coach has already said that he will grant playing time to the three young players: Niklas Sule, Max Meyer and Julian Brandt in Wednesday's friendly match against Finland.
