Argentina see off Bolivia; Brazil stage late rally to draw with Paraguay

Lionel Messi scored his 50th international goal for Argentina as he inspired an easy 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Bolivia in Cordoba.

The 28-year-old's 29th-minute penalty took him to just six behind leading scorer Gabriel Batistuta's tally of 54 and on this evidence it will only be a matter of time before he breaks the record.

Messi had a hand in Gabriel Mercado's opener as well as Argentina coasted to a third successive qualifying win, which should have been by a far greater margin.

Fresh from an impressive 2-1 win over Chile on Thursday, this was expected to be a far easier ride for Gerardo Martino's men and that is how it proved to be as they controlled proceedings from the off.

Two goals in the final 10 minutes saved Brazil from embarrassment against Paraguay as they came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Dunga's men looked set for a second defeat in six games when goals either side of half-time from Dario Lezcano and Edgar Benitez put Paraguay in a commanding lead.

Ricardo Oliveira's strike in the 80th minute gave Brazil hope, but they were reliant on Dani Alves' last-gasp strike to earn a point and break Paraguay's hearts.

The draw will paper over the cracks, though, as they were second best in Asuncion, and just two wins from their first six games means that the road to Russia is far from a smooth one.

Arturo Vidal and Mauricio Pinilla both scored twice as Chile beat Venezuela 4-1 at the Estadio Agustin Tovar.

Venezuela took an early lead with a goal from Romulo Otero, but that was all the hosts could muster as Chile came storming back for the win.

Pinilla headed home the leveller in the 33rd minute to send the teams to the break tied 1-1.

It was all Chile in the second half as Pinilla again came through with the winner to put his team in front.

Vidal added goals in the 72nd minute and again in injury time with the game already out of sight.

Edinson Cavani scored the lone goal for Uruguay as they saw off Peru 1-0.

Uruguay were coming off an emotional comeback vs. Brazil last Friday, when Cavani and Luis Suarez both scored to earn the team a 2-2 draw vs. the Selecao.

Cavani scored Uruguay's goal in the 53rd minute with an assist to Suarez.

Ecuador suffered their first defeat in World Cup qualifying, dropping a 3-1 result to Colombia in Barranquilla.

Carlos Bacca scored twice and Sebastian Perez added a third before Ecuador's Michael Arroyo added a meaningless late goal for the visitors.

Colombia manager Jose Pekerman kept most of the same side he used in a 3-2 win vs. Bolivia on March 24. The victory leaves Colombia with 10 points, while Ecuador are still in first in the qualifying table with 13.
