Lucas Biglia goal helps Argentina beat Colombia for first qualifying win

Argentina claimed their first win in 2018 World Cup qualifying against Colombia at the Metropolitano Roberto Melendez stadium.

Lucas Biglia's first-half strike was enough to give the Albiceleste a 1-0 triumph -- their first win at the fourth time of asking on the road to Russia.

It was also only their second goal in four games, but that result now puts Argentina up to sixth and back into contention in the fledgling campaign.

Colombia, meanwhile, remain outside the qualifying berths in seventh place after suffering their second defeat in the opening four games.

Argentina continue to play without injured strikers Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi, with the latter set for a possible return on Saturday against Real Madrid.

In the late game, Brazil cruised to a 3-0 win at home over Peru.

Douglas Costa provided the opener by getting a touch to Willian's cross after the Chelsea winger toyed with Peru's defence.

Renato Augusto then scored his first career goal for the Selecao to make it 2-0 in the 57th minute, sliding the ball home from the top of the box after Costa brought down a high box and evaded multiple defenders.

Filipe Luis capped the scoring on 77 minutes as Brazil moved into third place in the table, ahead of Paraguay and Chile on goal difference.

In other action, Uruguay were 3-0 winners against defending Copa America winners Chile.

The hosts got things started in the 23rd minute following a set piece when Sebastian Coates found Diego Godin who buried a shot from the center of the penalty area.

Alvaro Pereira and Martin Caceres scored within five minutes of each other to put the game away for Uruguay. Chile finished the match with 10 men after Jorge Valdivia was sent off during second-half injury time.

Surprise CONMEBOL table toppers Ecuador made it four wins from four with a 3-1 win against Venezuela, keeping them in first place in the qualifying table.

Fidel Martinez got the visitors on the scoreboard in the 15th minute, finishing a through ball from Juan Carlos Paredes on the counter-attack. Jefferson Montero doubled the lead for his team just eight minutes later.

Ecuador extended their lead to 3-0 with a Felipe Caicedo goal in the 60th minute. An 84th-minute strike from substitute Josef Martinez was too little too late for the hosts.

Paraguay beat Bolivia 2-1 after conceding a goal in the 59th minute. Yasmani Duk scored for the visitors, but the hosts roared back with goals from Lucas Barrios and Dario Lezcano to secure the win and stay in fourth place.
