Brazil ask CAS to delay Neymar's remaining 2-match ban

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Brazil's football federation has filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to lift a FIFA ban on Neymar playing in two World Cup qualifying matches.

The CAS said it aims to give a fast-track verdict before Brazil play at Chile on Oct. 8 in World Cup qualifiers.

Neymar is currently banned from Brazi's first two World Cup qualifying matches against Chile and Venezuela to complete a four-match sanction imposed at the Copa America in June. Neymar already sat out two 2015 Copa America matches to serve out the first part of the ban.

The appeal by the Confederation for Brazilian Football challenges FIFA and CONMEBOL rulings that Neymar must serve the ban immediately.

CAS says the CBF wants the ban applied only at the next Copa America.

A one-off Copa America Centenario tournament could be hosted in the United States next June.

If the CBF appeal fails, Neymar will miss the match in Chile and an Oct. 13 home qualifier against Venezuela.

Neymar was banned for insulting a referee and head-butting Colombia defender Jeison Murillo during Brazil's 1-0 loss to Colombia at the Copa America in June.

Brazil named their team for the October matches on Wednesday.
