FIFA life ban for Costa Rican official Eduardo Li in bribery case

CONCACAF are seeking to become a transparent organization in light of last May's FBI raid on their headquarters in Miami.
Eduardo Li was arrested at the Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich in a 2015 raid.

ZURICH -- FIFA's ethics committee has banned for life the former Costa Rica football federation president Eduardo Li for taking bribes.

The decision was announced on Friday.

Li already entered guilty pleas in Brooklyn federal court last October to charges of racketeering and wire fraud conspiracies.

A U.S. Department of Justice indictment said Li took six-figure bribes from marketing agency Traffic USA linked to commercial rights for World Cup qualifying matches.

Oceania confederation backs U.S.-led 2026 World Cup bid

Herculez Gomez delves into the 2026 World Cup hopes of the United States after Bruce Arena's recent comments.

The United States, Canada and Mexico bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup is supported by the OFC, the 11-nation Oceania football confederation.

Oceania says it also agrees the bid should have "an exclusive period of negotiation" with FIFA for the next year.

The 211 FIFA member federations can decide on May 11 to give the North American neighbours a March 2018 deadline without rivals to show their bid is technically sound.

The bid launched this month is currently FIFA's only realistic option for the...

Panamanian authorities say they've arrested seven people in the slaying of national team midfielder Amilcar Henriquez.

The prosecutor's office says the suspects were arrested in the Colon region on the country's Atlantic coast, where Henriquez was shot to death on Saturday. Three of them are reported to be minors.

Sunday's prosecution statement doesn't suggest a motive for the killing, but there's no evidence that a robbery was involved.

Authorities say a gunman shot the 33-year-old Henriquez several...

Andi Herzog: MLS didn't want to listen to input from U.S.'s Jurgen Klinsmann

Herculez Gomez weighs in on Andi Herzog's comments regarding Jurgen Klinsmann's relationship with MLS.
From David Villa's wonder goal to Brooks Lennon's improbable winner, relive all the goals from Week 7 in MLS.
Take a look back at the best goals from Week 6 throughout Major League Soccer.
ESPN FC's Taylor Twellman believes Christian Pulisic made a 'massive statement' with the fight he showed against Panama.

Former U.S. assistant coach Andi Herzog says Major League Soccer had no interest in listening to advice from Jurgen Klinsmann when he was in charge of the national team, saying league officials "thought he was just criticizing everything."

Klinsmann, who was fired in November after two World Cup qualifying defeats, endured a frosty relationship with the MLS leadership during his five years as United States coach.

He said in 2014 that U.S. players like Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley would have...
