Experienced Socceroos squad named for Iraq, U.A.E. World Cup qualifiers

Tim Cahill is the only Australian-based player to feature in the Socceroos squad for two World Cup qualifiers next month.

The newly-signed Melbourne City striker leads an experienced group of 23 players named by coach Ange Postecoglou on Wednesday to take on Iraq in Perth on Sept. 1 and the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi five days later.

Football Federation Australia called the squad a "full strength" line-up, despite the absence locally-based Asian Cup winners Alex Wilkinson, James Troisi and Matt McKay.

Postecoglou repeated his "form and fitness" mantra when it comes to international selection.

"Both Iraq and U.A.E. present challenges for us and every player will need to be ready to hit the ground running," he said.

"As has been the case right through, form and fitness are central to the squad we've selected and I believe we have the squad to get us off to a good start."

Irrespective of their absence, it's certainly an experienced squad, with no uncapped players named.

Matthew Spiranovic is back in the squad for the first time since October and Massimo Luongo returns after missing the friendly series with Greece.

Tomi Juric has been rewarded for his fine start with his new Swiss club Luzern, and will vie for a striking role with Cahill, China-based bolter Apostolos Giannou and Nathan Burns.

Postecoglou said he was pleased with his work in growing the pool of international talent at his disposal.

"The first 18 months was about putting together a team to do Australia proud at the 2014 World Cup and to win the Asian Cup," he said.

"We've now arrived at the final stage of World Cup qualifying where we will face a stronger group of opponents in testing conditions and we are comfortable that we have a core group of players with a stronger base of international experience."

Other locally-based recent call-ups Josh Risdon, Jason Geria and Jamie Maclaren have also missed out.
