Tim Cahill returns to Australia squad for opening 2018 World Cup qualifier

Veteran forward Tim Cahill has been included in Australia's 23-man squad for their opening 2018 World Cup qualifier away to Kyrgyzstan on June 17.

The 2015 Asian champions are aiming to book a place in their fourth consecutive World Cup finals. They've selected 19 players from their Asian Cup squad for the trip to Central Asia.

The 35-year-old Cahill had missed March friendlies against Germany and FYR Macedonia after injuring himself playing for Shanghai Shenhua but is expected to be a key man as the Socceroos begin their AFC second round qualifying campaign.

They will get assemble for a one-week camp in Dubai next month before travelling to Bishkek to take on Kyrgyzstan, who are 153rd in the FIFA rankings.

Cahill rejoins the Socceroos, along with defender Matthew Spiranovic and back-up goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic. Aaron Mooy, Adam Federici and Luke Devere have been left out.

"This is the start of the next chapter in our journey and we are all excited about what lies ahead over the next two years," Australia head coach Ange Postecoglou told www.ffa.com.au.

"We've been open in our desire to make an impact at the 2018 World Cup but first we need to qualify and that task is immediately in front of us.

"We've selected a relatively settled squad made up of the core of players that brought success at the Asian Cup but also the core of players that will take us through to the next World Cup."

The Socceroos will meet Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, Tajikistan and Bangladesh in home and away matches in Group B in the second round of qualifiers for Russia 2018. The eight group winners and four best second placed teams will advance to the third round of AFC qualifying.
