Josep Gombau evolving Vedran Janjetovic's passing game

Josep Gombau's arrival at Western Sydney is forcing as much of a change of approach for goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic as for the Wanderers' outfield players.

It's been a tough time for the Wanderers' passionate supporters, as their team has struggled to get results while adjusting to coach Gombau's style.

Janjetovic was a significant contributor to the Wanderers' second win in seven starts under their new mentor, a 2-1 home victory over Melbourne City on New Year's Day.

He made a stunning first-half penalty save from City's dead-ball ace Ross McCormack and an immaculate low catch of a thunderous goalbound free kick from Luke Brattan at the death.

Janjetovic has made adjustments to his game, working on shorter kicks to colleagues, rather than risk losing possession by hoofing the ball longer distances out of his hands to potential contests.

"I'm a lot more involved now with my feet, playing out from the back," Janjetovic told AAP. "We do focus on that especially goal kicks.

"We want to hold possession wherever we can on the field, so if the ball is going to come all the way back to me, then obviously I've got to have some sort of option as opposed to just booting it down the field and just giving away possession.

"We pride ourselves on keeping possession and making teams come towards us and then we can play in around them."

Vedran Janjetovic
Vedran Janjetovic has been encouraged to pass the ball short by new WSW boss Josep Gombau.

Studying opposition set pieces paid off for him on Monday, when he flung himself to his left to shatter McCormack's 100 percent penalty record in the A-League.

"We have analysis, we have videos on our iPads, so I have watched a few of his penalty kicks," Janjetovic said.

"We both went the same way, it was good for me, bad for him."

The Wanderers are looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they face Brisbane on Friday.

A victory over the Roar would put them back into the top six for at least one day.

"I'd love for it to kick on from here," Janjetovic said. "Get a couple of wins under our belt and you're right up in the top six and in finals contention."
