LONDON -- David Moyes praised West Ham United for building on the positives of their performance in defeat to Manchester City after they inflicted a fourth Premier League loss of the season on Chelsea at the London Stadium.
Marko Arnautovic struck in the sixth minute to put West Ham on course for their first Premier League win since September and unlike City, a lethargic Chelsea never looked likely to find an equaliser, directing just two of their 19 shots on target as Adrian, starting again in place of Joe Hart, enjoyed a quiet afternoon.
After the match a dejected Conte admitted that Chelsea cannot be considered title contenders, but Moyes preferred to focus on West Ham's display.
"It was a really good start to the game by us and then we got a goal, which was really well worked," the Scot said. "Then it was a very disciplined, organised performance. Maybe with a little bit more quality at times we could have got ourselves a second or a third goal, especially on the counter.
"I think going into the game we had taken confidence from the City game because of the performance, but ultimately we got nothing out of it. Today there was a bit of similarity, we need to stop conceding goals because I think we have got players that can score. We kept a clean sheet.
"We had a good plan and organisation to see how we could hurt Chelsea a little bit but make sure their quality and ability wouldn't overrun us."
The result lifts West Ham to within a point of safety but Moyes warned that more difficult challenges lie ahead, with Arsenal set to visit the London Stadium on Wednesday.
"All managers need wins," he added. "That's it. All managers need to win games very quickly. That's the way it is. I think coming into the club that I've got a pretty difficult run of fixtures, and I think most people agree. It was always going to be hard to win the games, but today we did the job.
"We were really organised and the game plan we set up worked. We knew how it was going to be and we were really close at Manchester City as well. From that you might say, 'Well, this might not be a surprise that West Ham can actually get something against Chelsea.'
"Walking into the dressing room I praised the players, put my jacket on and then thought, 'Oh no, I've got Arsenal in midweek.' That is football management. I'm really pleased and I've got a big smile, but I know I've got to get back to work because of the level of the opposition coming up."
