Slaven Bilic urges West Ham players to 'be smarter' after difficult late loss

LONDON -- West Ham manager Slaven Bilic urged his team to "be smarter" after they conceded twice in 160 seconds to lose Saturday's London derby at Tottenham in stoppage time.

The Hammers led 2-1 until the 88th minute but collapse when Harry Kane scored a tap-in and a penalty to seal a remarkable 3-2 victory for Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Earlier, Michail Antonio had given West Ham a first-half lead before Harry Winks levelled and Manuel Lanzini restored the visitors' advantage from the sport, when Vincent Janssen fouled Winston Reid.

"You can imagine it's very difficult to take this kind of defeat in a derby when there are four minutes to go and you are a goal up and you're thinking about killing the game," Bilic told a postmatch news conference.

"We had three really good opportunities to kill the game off but unfortunately it wasn't to be. You have to be smarter."

Spurs' stoppage-time penalty came after West Ham substitute Havard Nordtveit had fouled Spurs sub Son Heung-Min and it got worse for West Ham when captain Reid was given a second yellow card in the sixth and final minute of stoppage-time for a clumsy challenge on Kane.

"For the penalty, Son did a really good move and our player went down a little bit too quickly," Bilic said.

"Our penalty to be fair I didn't see. All I have seen is their penalty after the game and it was a penalty, it was a very clever move from Son.

"Our player slid and Son was waiting for the contact, which was there, so no complaints. And that foul from Reid is a big blow because he was excellent."
