Werder Bremen promote caretaker boss Alexander Nouri to manager

Werder Bremen have named interim coach Alexander Nouri as their head coach for the rest of the season.

Nouri, who took the interim job after the sacking of Viktor Skripnik, has guided Bremen to four points from three games in the caretaker role.

Skripnik, who had been at Bremen for two decades both as a player and a coach, had suffered four straight defeats this season.

In a statement on Bremen's official website, sporting director Frank Baumann said: "Alexander Nouri has shown in recent weeks that he can work well with the team and has already achieved a lot with them. We've decided that he deserves the chance to continue on this path.

"We were unable to find a candidate who was more of a complete package than Alexander Nouri.

"Sometimes in football you have to follow your gut feeling, and that is what we have done in this instance. We didn't want to let this opportunity slip away."

Nouri said he was looking forward to "a great challenge" and added: "We have a good squad, great coaches and staff that ensure things run perfectly. The facilities are excellent too. I'm looking forward to it."
