Aron Johannsson wants to prove 'quality' to Werder Bremen

U.S. international Aron Johannsson believes it will be difficult to return to Werder Bremen's starting XI following his two-match ban.

Johannsson, 25, returned to the Bremen side in August after 11 months sidelined with a hip injury and made a positive impact, scoring a goal and setting up another in his first three games back before being sent off for allegedly insulting the referee.

"I should better try to talk German to the referees from now on," Johannsson, who was sent off for an English insult and later claimed he was misheard, told reporters. "It was a mistake to chase the ref, but I was frustrated."

When Bremen travel to Darmstadt on Saturday, Johannsson knows that it will not be easy to return to the team.

"It's difficult to get into the first XI," he said, adding: "I have the quality to help the team. I have shown that with goals and assists."

In the absence of Johannsson and the injured Max Kruse and Claudio Pizzaro, 19-year-old Ousman Manneh has been promoted from the club's under-23 team, and the Gambian attacker grabbed his chance.

"He's done a real good job and has a lot of power," Johannsson said of Manneh, who arrived in Germany as a refugee in 2014. "I don't know if he's still on the pitch and running."

Meanwhile, former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry missed training on Tuesday and Wednesday with a minor knee problem, but according to the club, he will be fit to take on Darmstadt at the weekend.
