Claudio Pizarro transfer to Werder Bremen sees shirt sales soar - report

Claudio Pizarro's return to Werder Bremen saw the shirts sell out on Monday, according to local paper Kreiszeitung.

On Monday, Pizarro, 36, rejoined Bremen for a third time on a free transfer after leaving Bayern Munich.

The forward arrived at Bremen airport late on Sunday, and received an incredible reception from hundreds of Bremen fans waiting to greet him.

The Peruvian striker had spent the last three years at Bayern, where he made 50 Bundesliga appearances and scored 16 goals, but he was released in the summer after failing to score in his 13 league games for the champions last season.

Pizarro had begun his European career with Bremen in 1999 and, after leaving for Bayern in 2001, returned for a second spell in 2008 after he left Chelsea.

After putting paper on a one-year-deal, Pizarro said that he can "hardly wait" to return to the Weserstadion as a Bremen player.

"I'm really excited," Pizarro, who has made more appearances and scored more goals than any other foreign player in the Bundesliga, said.

Within three hours on Monday, the club sold more jerseys with Pizarro's No. 14 on the back than they had previously sold for other players since July 1, according to Kreiszeitung.

Shirts sold out on Monday, the paper said, and added that there had also been a significant rise in demand for match day tickets in the club's call centre.

"We should not expect too much of him right from the start, and not totally bank on him alone," Bremen club captain Clemens Fritz said.

"Claudio needs to find his rhythm first. We all know about his outstanding qualities in front of the goal and in the box. He will do very, very well for us."

On Tuesday morning, some 600 fans attended Pizarro's first training session at Bremen.
