Werder Bremen back Aron Johannsson despite slow start

Werder Bremen have backed U.S. attacker Aron Johannsson following his lackluster starting formation debut for the Bundesliga club.

The Viktor Skripnik XI picked up a point at capital club Hertha BSC on Friday, with Bremen attacker Anthony Ujah equalizing Valentin Stocker's opening goal.

Johannsson, 24, who came off the bench in the first league match against Schalke, remained on the pitch for 80 minutes, but was largely invisible. The former AZ Alkmaar attacker had 23 touches of the ball, and won only 38.9 percent of his direct duels.

"Aron gave it his best," Ujah, who lined up next to Johannsson in Bremen's attack, told kicker. The former FC Cologne striker added: "Two up front, that's great. We can present the opponents with more problems."

Bremen CEO Thomas Eichin also backed the U.S. international, and asked for patience. He said: "It's difficult for him. He needs those games to find out how Bundesliga works.'

Eichin added that Johannsson is "a very smart player," and said that he now needs to fine-tune his match, and also has to learn Ujah's paths.

"He will be even more valuable for us then," he said.
