Watford striker Troy Deeney must earn England spot - Walter Mazzarri

Troy Deeney has been told to continue to prove his England credentials by playing well for Watford.

Hornets boss Walter Mazzarri believes his captain is capable of performing for England if given the opportunity.

The 28-year-old forward has scored three times in the last four games ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash at Middlesbrough.

"Deeney has to show and to prove in the next games that he can be called up to the national team," Mazzarri said.

"When I speak with Troy, I always tell him that he just needs to show it with Watford in order to be called up for the national team.

"He's got everything that a good forward needs. He's got physical, technical ability.

"It's just a matter of him proving it with Watford."

Deeney's goal against Bournemouth prior to the international break was his 99th for the club.

Mazzarri hopes the century is reached quickly and that Deeney continues finding the net for Watford.

The Italian added: "The important thing is for them to perform very well on the pitch, helping the whole team.

"If he does this the goals will come. I hope he doesn't score only 100 goals, but many more."
