The former Manchester City and Liverpool winger is set to join Serie A side Udinese on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign after being released by Galatasaray in January.

But in the meantime the 31-year-old who has been capped 18 times by Spain will build his fitness up with Watford, who are owned by the Pozzo family who also hold controlling stakes in Udinese and La Liga side Granada.

Last season Watford had 10 loan players on their books from Udinese and Granada, as they came close to reaching the Premier League under Gianfranco Zola but this season only Essaid Belkalem and Alexander Merkel have made temporary moves from those clubs.

The Hornets are currently 12th, 10 points outside of the playoff positions with nine games of the season remaining.
