Gareth Bale: Wales disappointed but proud after Euro 2016 loss to Portugal

Wales star Gareth Bale said his team could be proud of their efforts after their superb Euro 2016 run ended with semifinal defeat to Portugal.

Chris Coleman's players, who had reached the last four thanks to a stunning win over Belgium, were undone by two goals early in the second half in Lyon.

Bale's Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo thumped home a superb header to put Portugal in front, with Nani poking home a second from a scuffed Ronaldo effort three minutes later.

Wales were unable to find a route back into the game, and Bale told ITV: "I felt we deserved better.

"It's difficult to analyse it now. We are massively disappointed but, first and foremost, we have to be proud of ourselves.

"We have given everything and we were determined to enjoy ourselves. We tried our hardest to get back into the game and fought until the last seconds.

"We are sorry not to get to the final, but we gave everything and have no regrets. Nobody expected us to get this far, but we did.

"We are a proud nation and proud of what we have achieved. We would have liked to get to the final and challenge for the trophy, but it wasn't meant to be.

"We will pick ourselves back up and lift the spirits. We will go again."

Bale told reporters Wales had shown "pride and passion" and praised their fans as "the best in the world."

He added: "We wish we could have done it for them. We'd like to thank all the fans at home and all the fans who travelled out and behaved themselves.

"We look forward to the future. We have confidence, and it's about the bigger picture."
