Wales handed Ashley Williams fitness boost ahead of Belgium quarterfinal

Wales captain Ashley Williams trained with the rest of the squad on Tuesday, raising hopes the defender will be fit for Friday's European Championship quarterfinal against Belgium.

Swansea City centre-back Williams, 31, suffered a shoulder injury in the win over Northern Ireland on Saturday and was forced to leave the ground with his arm in a sling after playing on with the injury.

But Chris Coleman told reporters on Monday that scans on the injury had revealed only bruising and Williams has since been able to join the squad in training.

The news will be a boost for Wales manager Chris Coleman, who uses Williams at the centre of a back three and will be relying on his captain to lead the defensive effort against Belgium's much-heralded attack.

Wales took four points off Belgium in qualifying for the tournament, not conceding a goal against the Red Devils in the two matches.

Friday's quarterfinal will be held at 9 p.m. local time at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille.
