Wales manager Chris Coleman: We needed lift of an early goal

Wales manager Chris Coleman said his side could have done with an early goal after watching Israel frustrate them in a 0-0 draw at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Coleman's team, who needed a win to ensure their place at Euro 2016 in France next summer, made a whirlwind start in front of a noisy, sold-out crowd.

They missed an early chance to take the lead when Aaron Ramsey headed over from close range after Andy King's shot, following a pass by defender Jazz Richards, had been stopped by Ofir Martziano.

And in the second half, Gareth Bale fired over from a free-kick before the home side should have had a penalty when Bale's inswinging cross hit defender Eitan Tibi on the arm.

Coleman told Sky Sports: "Had we scored early, it would have settled us down. The atmosphere was great.

"But we still have two games left. It is in our hands, so Israel and Belgium have to do their work to catch us.

"The lads were tired at the end of a five-hour flight to Cyprus and five hours back [for their 1-0 qualifying win on Friday].

"Then playing Israel today, it has taken it out of us -- but we are four points closer to where we want to be. We need one more nudge, and then we are there."

Captain Ashley Williams added: "They made it difficult for us. We wanted to get it done and dusted today, but it has been a positive week.

"We have two more games to go, we are still top of the group and we keep the momentum going."
