Gareth Bale says Wales deserved victory over Belgium

Wales match winner Gareth Bale was almost lost for words as his goal edged his nation towards a 1-0 win against Belgium that moved them a giant stride closer to the Euro 2016 finals.

In front of a raucous and passionate crowd in Cardiff, Wales saw off the side ranked second in the FIFA rankings with a first-half Bale striker, which sparked wild celebrations from the Real Madrid star.

The victory moved Wales five points clear of third-placed Israel in Group B and with the top two nations assured of qualification for the final in France next summer, the world's most expensive footballer looks set to get a chance to play in his first major tournament.

It would also be Wales' first appearance in an international finals since 1958.

"I can't really put it into words to be honest," an elated Bale told Sky Sports after he scored his 17th international goal on the occasion of his 50th cap.

"The crowd here, what can you say? I think we have the best fans in the world. We prepared well, we worked hard together and showed that we can play some good football. We were under the cosh at times, but we battled in every area and I thought we deserved the win.

"After 65 or 70 minutes, I was gone physically. The gaffer told us to put everything onto the pitch, leave nothing out there. Obviously the season is over now and we have got the win we all wanted.

"We know the position we are in now. We will enjoy this and when the next camp comes around, we will be working hard and ready to do the business."

Aaron Ramsey was equally euphoric after he played a key role in the success against Belgium.

"Everybody worked their socks off and a few players were struggling at the end, but that shows the effort we have put in," said the Arsenal midfielder.

"We prepared amazingly all week. Even the players who couldn't get on in this game played their part and it was probably one of the best atmospheres I have played in front of wearing a Welsh jersey. Hopefully we did the fans proud."

While the Welsh win was vital to their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2016, the result was also hugely significant for their hopes of a lofty seeding in the upcoming draw for the 2018 World Cup finals, with Chris Coleman's side now on course to be among Europe's top seeds in that draw.
