Villarreal to unveil new stadium name in January before Barcelona clash

Villarreal fans will have a new name for their stadium in 2017, the La Liga club have announced.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig confirmed that he will unveil the new name for the venue, which is currently known as El Madrigal, hours before the club's first game of the New Year -- a league encounter at home to Barcelona on Jan. 8.

Tuesday's 1-1 draw against Toledo in the Copa del Rey round-of-32 return leg -- enough to give them a 4-1 aggregate victory -- was the last game for the team this year ahead of the winter break.

Roig, who revealed back in October that the stadium could be known as "El Estadio de la Ceramica" (Ceramics stadium), is quoted as saying by El Mundo: "The new name will relate to ceramics to highlight this product that is so linked to Villarreal."

The ceramic and porcelain industry is the biggest trade in Villarreal, a city with a 50,755 population based in the Castellon region.

El Madrigal stadium, which has a 25,000 capacity, is owned by the Villarreal council and was inaugurated in 1923 under the name "Campo del Villarreal." Two years later, it was renamed El Madrigal.

Villarreal are in the process of modernising the stadium and have completed the first phase of remodelling the south stand and the facade, which has been covered in yellow ceramic tiles.

"It has gone very well with the sponsors, who are very happy with the effort and the work done by the club," Roig said.

Things are looking good for Villarreal, who go into the New Year still in three competitions. Fran Escriba's side are fourth in La Liga, with 29 points from 16 games, and have also progressed to the round of 16 in the Copa del Rey, while they will take on Roma in the round of 32 in the Europa League.
