John Brooks can be a 'weapon' for Wolfsburg - coach Andries Jonker

Wolfsburg boss Andries Jonker has said U.S. defender John Brooks can be a "weapon" for the Bundesliga side as he granted him a few days off to regain his freshness.

Brooks, 24, became the most expensive American player of all time when joining Wolfsburg from his hometown club Hertha Berlin in a €20 million transfer earlier this summer.

At the weekend, Brooks scored from a set piece in a 3-0 friendly win at Fulham, and Jonker said the centre-back can be an asset at both ends of the pitch.

"Jay [John] is strong on headers, both in defence and attack," Jonker said. "I am delighted that he might be a weapon for us."

Wolfsburg have been looking for a towering defensive leader since Brazilian defender Naldo left for Schalke on a free transfer in 2016, and Jonker said that he is happy to finally have the player that addresses the club's needs.

"It's very important to me that we have an option to score from a set piece," he said.

Brooks, who has said he dreams of playing in the Premier League, is enjoying a strong preseason but has had little rest because of his involvement with United States in June in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Jonker confirmed he would miss Wednesday's preseason friendly with Newcastle, saying: "He got a few days off. Everyone should have three weeks of rest."
