Wolfsburg's Mario Gomez wanted to join Champions League club instead

New Wolfsburg signing Mario Gomez has conceded the Bundesliga side were not his first-choice club this summer. He'd instead hoped to join a team in the Champions League.

The 31-year-old Germany international signed a three-year contract at the Volkswagen Arena on Wednesday, but admitted Die Wolfe weren't the first club on his transfer list.

"I wanted to play Champions League football, but most clubs already had enough options in attack," said Gomez, who ended his loan with Turkish side Besiktas this summer.

"And then there were some clubs that did play in the Champions League, but are likely to go out after the group stages.

"In the end, the complete package Wolfsburg offered and my desire to return to Germany were decisive.

"I am perhaps hungrier than ever before. Our goal is to return to Europe."

Gomez, who spent time at Bayern Munich and Fiorentina, has been a regular at all levels of the Germany national team setup, scoring 29 goals in 68 appearances for the senior side thus far.

He participated in Germany's Euro 2016 campaign this summer, but was injured in the squad's quarterfinal defeat of Italy.
