Wolfsburg extend contract of director Klaus Allofs

Wolfsburg director of sport Klaus Allofs has extended his contract with the Bundesliga club until 2019.

The 58-year-old, who arrived in November 2012, has overseen the club's rise to second in the standings this season, culminating in a return to the Champions League next term for the first time since they won the title for the first time back in 2009.

"Getting Klaus Allofs was a stroke of luck for Wolfsburg," said chairman Dr Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz.

"He has led the club where we all wanted it to be, namely inside the top third of the Bundesliga and back into Europe, a lot quicker than expected.

"Yet Wolfsburg are not only respected on the field, but they also have a nice image. To put it short, Wolfsburg are fun again.

"We are delighted that Klaus Allofs is going to continue his work here, because our path together has not reached its conclusion yet."

Allofs moved to Wolfsburg after spending 13 years in a similar position with Werder Bremen.

They were regulars in the Champions League under his and coach Thomas Schaaf's guidance, and he now appears to be bringing similar success to Wolfsburg.

"Joining Wolfsburg was a real challenge and it is still a challenge now," Allofs said. "We've reached our first objectives after almost three years, but we are still not where we want to be yet.

"I came here with the aim of establishing Wolfsburg as one of the leading clubs in the Bundesliga and a regular in Europe in the long term and, with this team and coach Dieter Hecking, we are working together on developing Wolfsburg on all levels."

With one game of the season remaining, Wolfsburg are certain to finish either second or third in the Bundesliga, assuring them of a place in the group stage of next season's Champions League.
