Wolfsburg expecting 'progress' from dropped Nicklas Bendtner

Nicklas Bendtner's struggles at Wolfsburg continue as the former Arsenal attacker did not feature in the club's friendly against Ajax Cape Town.

On Wednesday, Wolfsburg played their first friendly following the death of midfielder Junior Malanda, 20, beating South African side Ajax Cape Town 4-1.

The Bundesliga side played without a black ribbon to commemorate Malanda, with Die Wolfe coach Dieter Hecking telling kicker: "We don't want that right now.

"We don't want to be confronted with it in every game. We know that difficult days are ahead of us, and we still have lot to cope with."

The Wolfsburg coach played 21 professionals in the victory over Cape Town, with Dutch attacker Bas Dost on target twice after he came off the bench for the second half.

One of the very few players not featuring in the win was former Gunners striker Bendtner, who stayed on the bench for 90 minutes.

Bendtner, who so far has started only four games for Wolfsburg, made a total of 13 appearances and scored only three goals, had earlier been seen chatting to Dieter Hecking while the rest of the team was warming up for a training session.

"He approached me, he had some something to discuss with me," Hecking later told kicker editor Thomas Hiete.

Speaking to Bild, the club's sporting executive Klaus Allofs added: "You can't judge a player in our current situation, but of course we want to see progress in the upcoming weeks and months."
