Wolfsburg continued their fine start to the season with a 2-0 win over Hamburg at the weekend, notching up their eighth consecutive victory in all competitions.
Die Wolfe remain second in the Bundesliga, and boast one of the season's most in-form players in former Chelsea midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.
The 2009 Bundesliga champions have been beaten only twice in their first 11 league games of the season, and have won their last six, scoring 14 goals and conceding only three.
They are four points behind defending champions Bayern Munich and the German media, looking for a challenger to Bayern's dominance, heralded their run of performances.
"That's how they won the league," Die Welt headlined, while Suddeutsche Zeitung noted that "Wolfsburg are sending signals to Bayern."
"It was just great how we tackled this match today," Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs told reporters after the match.
"That was a very dedicated performance despite the exhausting Europa League match [a 5-1 win against Krasnodar] on Thursday. It's not easy to score goals against us. We are on course."
Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking also praised the work ethic of his players, saying: "I am very satisfied. We dominated Hamburg only three days after a difficult match in a European competition."
Both Wolfsburg goals on Sunday were set up by De Bruyne, who joined in a 22 million-euro deal in January.
The Belgium international has assisted in nine of the club's 22 league goals this season -- more than any other player in the German top flight.
"You will never be able to completely shut him off," Hecking told kicker. "He has the something extra that you need to play at the top for a long time."
