Dani Parejo: I rejected chance to leave Valencia in January transfer window

Valencia captain Dani Parejo has said he declined the option of leaving the struggling La Liga side last month.

Last month, Superdeporte reported that Valencia were willing to sell the midfielder and planned to use the funds to buy new players.

Reports in Spain claimed Sevilla had rekindled their interest in signing Parejo, who has scored three goals and set up five more in 20 league starts.

But he told AS: "I could have left, but I didn't. I believed it wasn't the best for Valencia because we are in a delicate situation and my duty is to give my contribution to this team to come out of this situation.

"I reiterate that I want my departure to be good for everyone, and in January, it wouldn't have been good for Valencia."

Valencia have won five and lost 11 of their 21 league games and are 15th in the table, only four points clear of the relegation zone.

"We had hoped to compete for Europe but unfortunately, our aim is now to avoid the drop," Parejo said.

"It has been a mixture of everything. Of course, we, the players, are mostly to blame but we are also affected by what happens around us.

"We are aware of the situation and united."

Parejo was close to joining Sevilla last summer, but reports suggested Valencia had turned down a €10 million bid.

The 27-year-old said: "There was an interest from Sevilla.

"I thought my time at Valencia had come to an end and I told the club that I wanted to leave. The club said no and I stayed."

Asked whether he intended to leave in the summer, he said: "In football, you never know."

Valencia take on Athletic Bilbao at the Mestalla on Sunday and host league leaders Real Madrid three days later.
