Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo apologises for nightclub footage

Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo has apologised after footage emerged of him appearing to be drunk and holding a shisha pipe in a nightclub.

The footage showed the player at a club in Valencia.

His struggling team did not play at the weekend after their game against Real Madrid was postponed because of Madrid's involvement in the Club World Cup.

Parejo, 27, said he regretted his actions and told a news conference: "We are all aware of the situation of the club, but it was my day off and we are all human.

"It was a day off and we had no game at the weekend, although I cannot justify it.

"I have apologised to the president, to the club, to the coach [Cesare Prandelli], with whom I've spoken personally, to the fans and to my teammates.

"I made a mistake and it will not happen again -- but I haven't killed anyone."

Prandelli left Parejo out of his squad for Wednesday's Copa del Rey game against Leganes.

"After the game, we will decide with the club what action to take," he said.

"Parejo apologised to me. A player can be judged and criticised, but men always have to maintain a certain dignity."

A statement from the Association of Supporters of Valencia said: "Parejo earns €2.5 million per season -- he is the second highest earner in the team and needs to give an example of commitment. We only ask for respect."

Parejo has been one of Valencia's few bright lights in what has been a dismal campaign, scoring three goals and setting up five more in 15 league starts.
