Cesare Prandelli says Valencia still have work to do after first win

Cesare Prandelli started his tenure as Valencia coach with a 2-1 win at Sporting Gijon on Sunday but says there is much improvement needed.

The former Italy and Fiorentina coach, who was appointed to replace Pako Ayestaran after Los Che lost their opening four games of the season, oversaw a victory that lifted the club out of La Liga's bottom three.

"We played with a lot of intensity on a very difficult pitch against a well-organised opponent," Prandelli said.

"It has been a very level game. I'm very happy but we have a lot of work to do. But the three points give us morale to continue to work and improve. It was important for us to find balance."

The 59-year-old, who signed a contract with Valencia until June 2018, had spoken of the need to find balance during his unveiling.

"Earlier this week we had spoken about this," Prandelli said. "It was important to find balance. In the second half we had more possession and we had more balance.

"What I liked the most was the union, the will to do good things and the spirit of wanting to work that the group showed."

Prandelli, who is Valencia's ninth coach since 2012, has taken over a team that has struggled at both ends of the pitch.

Valencia had scored just nine goals in seven games before Prandelli's arrival and have failed to keep a clean sheet in their opening eight games.

Suarez, who is on loan at Valencia from Watford, says the team are still adapting to Prandelli's tactics.

"We've been working with him for two weeks," the Spanish midfielder told Superdeporte. "The coach wants a united, organised and balanced side. We have to give away less goalscoring opportunities.

"Against Sporting, we could have scored more goals had we made better choices."

Prandelli also believes it will take time for Valencia to come around to his management style.

"I liked the spirit shown by the players," he said. "Right now, I'm only thinking of improving the team and trying to give this group an identity, temperament and personality."
