Gary Neville slams officials after Valencia youth team penalty farce

Valencia boss Gary Neville called the officiating scandalous after a refereeing error saw the Spanish club's youth side lose to Chelsea in a controversial penalty shootout on Tuesday.

The UEFA Youth League match ended 1-1 at Chelsea's Cobham training ground before going to penalties.

Chelsea won the shootout 5-3, but only after Alberto Gil's spot-kick -- Valencia's first of the shootout -- was wrongly disallowed.

Videos showed the ball crossing the line before striking a stanchion and bouncing clear, but both the referee and the official on the goal line ruled it had hit the post.

The players protested at length on the pitch, and afterwards Neville used Twitter to make clear his own views.

"Scandolous!!! Can't believe what I've just seen...'' he wrote about a post from Valencia's official Twitter feed about the incident, which read: "Incredible! The ball from Valencia has been a goal but the referee has not given it.''

Valencia first-team players Antonio Barragan and Paco Alcacer also complained about the decision on Twitter.

The club later put out a statement claiming that they would present their case to UEFA.

It read: "Valencia CF wish to inform our fans that the club will present a protest in relation to the official decision to disallow a goal by our youth team in the penalty shootout of the UEFA Youth League against Chelsea FC. We trust that UEFA will give the right response at the level required by the situation, after they have a chance to analyse our appeal.

"Finally, Valencia CF wishes to thank the sporting spirit of Chelsea FC for having recognised that the disallowed penalty had entered the goal."

Valencia president Lay Hoon Chan added: "We all feel immensely proud of the performance and fighting spirit you have shown today. I am sure that the experience gained in this competition will help you to be stronger as professional players. Do not lose your confidence and your faith in football because of this incident."
