Valencia exclude Zakaria Bakkali from Champions league squad

Valencia have named their Champions League squad with the surprise exclusion of summer signing Zakaria Bakkali.

The 19-year-old winger joined Valencia in July on a five-year contract as a free agent after his contract with PSV Eindhoven had expired.

The Belgium international made his La Liga debut as a substitute in Valencia's 0-0 result at Rayo Vallecano in their league opener on Aug. 22.

Bakkali did not feature in Los Che's 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruna last weekend.

As expected, injured goalkeeper Diego Alves was left out of Nuno Espirito Santo's 23-man selection.

Goalkeeper Matt Ryan is expected to be sidelined for at least a month after injuring his knee during Sunday's 1-1 home draw against Deportivo La Coruna.

The Australia international underwent surgery in Valencia on Monday and is set to be sidelined from four to six weeks.

Valencia said in a statement: "Ryan underwent arthroscopic surgery to resolve problems in his right meniscus.

"The surgery went well.''

Ryan is expected to sit out Primera Division games against Sporting, Betis, Espanyol and Granada as well as Valencia's Champions League Group D matches at home to Zenit St Petersburg and away to Lyon.

"With a bit of luck, I will be back fit in four weeks,'' Ryan said. "Look forward to coming back stronger."

The 23-year-old joined Valencia from Club Brugge earlier this summer and is under contract with the Che club until June 2021.

The 25-man roster submitted to UEFA for Champions League Group D matches at home to Zenit St Petersburg and away to Lyon includes Joao Cancelo, Ruben Vezo, Aderllan Santos, Shkodran Mustafi, Lucas Orban, Alvaro Negredo, Sofian Feghouli, Paco Alcacer, Daniel Parejo, Piatti, Danilo, Yoel Rodriguez, Jose Luis Gaya, Enzo Perez, Rodrigo, Javi Fuego, Antonio Barragan, Rodrigo De Paul, Andre Gomes, Santi Mina, Aymena Abdennour, Jaume Domenech and Matt Ryan.
