Ft. Lauderdale take down D.C. United, N.Y. Cosmos beat New York City FC

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers got Wednesday's U.S. Open Cup action started with a bang, beating Major League Soccer's D.C. United 4-3 on penalty kicks after 120 minutes of scoreless regular and extra time.

The Strikers' Matheus Carvalho slotted the decisive penalty after United's Luciano Acosta and Jared Jeffrey missed their spot kicks.

David Mateos' second-half strike was enough for Orlando City edge out fellow Florida club Jacksonville Armada 1-0.

Columbus Crew SC cruised past the Tampa Bay Rowdies  by a final score of 4-0. Justin Meram opened the scoring for Columbus in the first half, and Ethan Finlay, Marshall Hollingsworth and Christian Martínez scored in the second half to secure the win.

The Philadelphia Union got all it could handle from USL side Harrisburg City Islanders, with the MLS club holding on for a 3-2 win.

Walter Restrepo opened the scoring for the Union, with Ronald Alberg putting the hosts up 2-0 before half-time. The Islanders came storming back to level the match, before Alberg scored his second from a free kick to put the game away.

The New York Cosmos knocked crosstown MLS club New York City FC out of the cup with an 88th-minute goal from Danny Szetela to secure a 1-0 win for the NASL team.

The Rochester Rhinos couldn't find a goal as they battled the New York Red Bulls but wound up on the wrong end of a 1-0 result. Sacha Kljestan scored from a penalty kick in the 20th minute and the Red Bulls were able to hold off the Rhinos for the rest of the match.

Benny Feilhaber opened the scoring from the penalty spot for Sporting Kansas City in a 2-1 extra-time win versus Minnesota United.

Christian Ramirez levelled for the host team in the 81st minute, but Diego Rubio came through for SKC in extra time to put the game away and avoid penalties.

The Chicago Fire needed penalties to beat NASL's Indy Eleven 4-3 after the match ended level at 1-1 following regular and extra-time.

Carlos Lizarazo's regular-time brace for FC Dallas was cancelled out with goals from the Oklahoma City Energy's Jordan Rideout and Michael Thomas.

With no goals coming 30 minutes of extra time, Dallas needed penalties to advance past the USL side in a dramatic 6-5 finish from the spot.

The Houston Dynamo had no trouble beating cross-state foes San Antonio FC 4-0.
