The Philadelphia Union advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup by outlasting the New York Red Bulls 4-3 on penalties on Tuesday. After the game finished 1-1 at the end of extra time, Fernando Aristeguieta sent in the winning penalty for the Union. The Union played down a man for more than an hour after Conor Casey was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on Red Bulls defender Connor Lade. But despite the disadvantage, it was Philadelphia that took the lead in the 55th minute when Eric Ayuk scored on the counterattack. New York could not break through until stoppage time, when Lloyd Sam turned the ball in to force an extra 30 minutes. With neither side finding a winner in extra time the game went to penalties, which Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips started by powering his shot against the bar. The following players converted until Union goalkeeper John McCarthy stopped Sam's shot in the fourth round. Fred then had a chance to win it but saw his shot saved, but it only postponed the inevitable as Aristeguieta won it in the fifth round. The Union will next face the winner of Thursday's game between the Chicago Fire and Orlando City. In the other quarterfinal on the day, Sporting Kansas City mounted a furious late rally to beat the Houston Dynamo 3-1. After a scoreless first half, Will Bruin started the scoring for the Dynamo with a close-range finish in the 59th minute. However, the Dynamo, who were down to 10 men after a 30th-minute red card to Luis Garrido, wilted in the final 20 minutes. Benny Feilhaber, Dom Dwyer and Krisztian Nemeth all scored in the game's closing minutes to earn SKC a spot in the semifinals.
