Luis Suarez downplays injury concerns after Uruguay draw with Colombia

Luis Suarez said he was just tired, not injured, despite making some gestures on the pitch in Uruguay's World Cup qualifying draw vs. Colombia that indicated he might have been in some discomfort.

Suarez, 29, put Uruguay ahead in the 79th minute, but Colombia's Fernando Mina brought his team level minutes later and the two sides split the points on the evening.

The Barcelona striker had an injury scare in training with Uruguay on Monday when he and centre-back Diego Godin collided with Suarez playing goalkeeper in training for La Celeste, but he was OK for the match on Tuesday.

Suarez, who is now tied with Hernan Crespo with the most goals in CONMEBOL WCQ history at 19, told VTV: "It was just an accumulation of all the tiredness. I have played a lot of matches and traveled a lot but the important thing is to give my all for this team.

"Obviously we are frustrated because we felt like we could have won it. But we salvaged one more important point against a tough rival and we were playing away under these conditions."

Uruguay have traditionally struggled in Barranquilla and were faced with challenging playing conditions as there were heavy rains throughout the match.

Suarez said: "It is a point, obviously. We must enjoy it and focus on winning the next one.

"The rain helped bring the heat down but it also worked against us a bit at match-time because the ball was heavier and it didn't move as well."

Pending the outcome of the rest of Tuesday's matches, Uruguay is still in first place in the CONMEBOL table, leaving manager Oscar Tabarez satisfied with their position just past the halfway point of qualifying.

Tabarez said: "This is the first time that we didn't lose in Barranquilla. The point is very important for us. The table is broken up. We are satisfied. We could have won and in the second half Uruguay had the chances at goal."
