Luis Suarez will play no part in Uruguay's Copa America opener against Mexico, coach Oscar Tabarez confirmed on Saturday.
The Barcelona striker had been a major doubt to make the Uruguay lineup on Sunday after suffering a hamstring injury during the Copa del Rey final on May 22.
And Tabarez said in his prematch news conference that Suarez will not be available to face El Tri.
"Luis Suarez is completely ruled out of the game against Mexico," he said. "He's a player that surprises you with his recovery, but he's not ready.
"His injury only happened 14 days ago."
Suarez attended training with the rest of the Uruguay squad on Saturday, coming into the stadium 30 seconds after the rest of the squad. He trained off to the side, away from the rest of the squad.
Tabarez also would not confirm if Suarez would be ready to face Venezuela in their second Group C game next Thursday.
"If you want to know if he will be [ready] against Venezuela, ask the doctor, not me," the coach said.
Tabarez also highlighted the threat Mexico pose and the respect he has for Juan Carlos Osorio's team.
Osorio stressed that Suarez is one of the best five strikers in the world in his news conference, adding that he is the best on current form.
"Personally, it makes me sad that Luis Suarez isn't available because I believe you prepare to compete with the best and hopefully he recovers soon because it would be extraordinary to compete against him and the best Uruguay possible," Osorio said.
