U.S. women's national team legend Abby Wambach was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame on the first ballot.
She will be enshrined in September, along with Sunil Gulati, who was president of the U.S. Soccer Federation from 2006 through 2018.
Wambach, a 38-year-old native of Rochester, N.Y., is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, a two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion and a six-time U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year. She also won an NCAA women's soccer title at Florida.
Wambach retired in 2015 as the all-time leading scorer in international competition with 184 goals in 256 matches -- the most in men's or women's play.
Gulati, 59, was born in India but moved to Connecticut with his family at age 5 and grew up playing soccer. He held a number of positions with the federation through the years, including executive vice president, and also served as executive vice president of the 1994 World Cup Organizing Committee and as deputy commissioner of Major League Soccer (1995-99).
The induction will take place at the Hall of Fame in Frisco, Texas, on Sept. 21.
