Freddy Adu hints at return to soccer after one-year hiatus

Former United States international Freddy Adu has suggested he will return to soccer after a year spent away from the game.

Adu, 28, has bounced around the world since making his professional debut for MLS club D.C. United as a 14-year-old back in 2004.

The midfielder was inactive for all of 2017 following a two-and-a-half-year spell with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL. However on Friday, Adu seemed to declare his intentions to return to the sport.

He said on Twitter: "Have made a decision to start fresh after a year away from soccer.

"This decision is solely based on the fact that I want to play as much as possible this year then move forward from there.

"Have discovered my love for the sport again. News soon!"

Reports in Sweden had linked Adu with a move to Swedish third-division club Oskarshamns AIK last month, but he denied any deal had been struck.

Over his career, Adu made 17 appearances for the United States, scoring two goals.

His most recent action came in the 2011 Gold Cup final loss to Mexico, in which he played 86 minutes and recorded an assist.
